Los Angeles County is now solidifying plans for the future development of the Marina, as leases expire over the next eight years, including lots across Admiralty that will directly affect views from Azzurra and Yvonne. B. Burke Park (aka Admiralty Park).
A “Marina Del Rey Visioning Statement” released earlier in February envisions “reconfiguring the area from the Fire station to Mindanao Way” including, “potentially a select-service hotel with rooftop amenities”. The area directly across from the pool deck is zoned for a hotel. Current zoning and planning guidelines allow for much more intensive development than exists today.
Los Angeles County planning outreach was not extended to homeowners and residents of Azzurra, Cove and Regatta because we are technically in the City of Los Angeles and not the Marina – although of course we are residents of the County. Members of the public aware of County plans have opposed intensive development of the Marina and believe more of the undeveloped Marina lands, purchased by taxpayers, should be preserved for marine related services, restaurants, recreation facilities, paths and parks. However, there is no community organization we are aware of representing the interests of local area residents.
The Board has appointed Peter McClintock to form a committee to bring the interests of Azzurra to County Planning and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The Committee will advise the Board of Directors regarding the redevelopment project. Activities will include reviewing County plans, developing an alternative vision, looking at legal issues, mounting a letter writing campaign, presenting our perspectives at public meetings (3 minutes at a time) and developing a social and media campaign to enlist public support. We plan to coordinate or join our activities with Cove and Regatta.
We are looking for:
Committee members especially those with expertise in architecture, city planning, law, government and media relations, web site development, social networking and presentation skills.
